#IQS UPDATE

I figured it has been a bit since I sent an update about my #iqs #iquitsugar detox so here it is …

With the holidays approaching, a bit of fear sank in and I also started grieving the fact that I would not be indulging in the traditional Thanksgiving fixins.  I took a gander at week three of the detox program in Sarah Wilson’s book, I Quit Sugar and week three calls for the elimination of all sugars including natural sweeteners and even all fruit!

My #iqs buddy and I decided we would extend week two of maintaining the paring it back step through Thanksgiving with plans to dive in head first the following week.  What will this mean?  I am not really sure and honestly I am a bit scared but the complete elimination of all sugar (including fruit) is  definitely going to this challenge to the next level, and will most definitely require some additional tools.

So far the cravings have become less and less but with Thanksgiving,  I wanted to indulge just a bit yet within some parameters.  I only had to prepare a side dish which I chose as traditional style green beans, but I opted to make a dessert as well.

I made not just one treat, but two!  The first dessert I chose was centered around the traditional pumpkin pie,

minus the sugar, and with an almond meal crust.  The second dessert was a dairy-free, paleo-friendly, chocolate mousse and all I can say was ‘Wow’!  The pumpkin was only okay, but the

“moo-less chocolate mousse” from the cookbook Practical Paleo was delicious! It was absolutely delightful and the perfect amount of sweetness.  The ingredients used aren’t necessarily ingredients Sarah Wilson recommends in her book, but in my opinion still better than cane sugar for our week two extension.  This sweet treat was the sweetest thing I’ve had in over two weeks and I thought it was just right,  but when my mother tasted it she said it needed sugar.  It goes to show how once removing sugar, your desire for sweetness does indeed change and what one doesn’t think of as sweet is actually quite sweet after the elimination of sugar!  We have grown so accustomed to sweet foods and sugar in almost everything we eat that we don’t even realize it.

Here is this amazing recipe taken directly from Practical Paleo,

2 ripe avocados
1/4 cup unsweetened cacao powder
2-4 tablespoons coconut milk
1 ripe banana (optional)
1-4 tablespoons maple syrup or softened honey (optional to taste and may not be necessary if banana is sweet enough)
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of salt

Scoop out the flesh of the avocados into a small food processor, or mash them by hand.  Add the cacao powder, coconut milk, ripe banana, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sea salt, and process until creamy, whipped, and well blended.  You may whisk the ingredients together as well, if necessary.

Serve in individual dishes or bowls.  Garnish with cacao nibs, toasted hazelnuts, or coconut.

Find your light…over and over and over again!
